Mitsui & Co, RWE, and the Port of Tilbury have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop two green hydrogen projects at the Port of Tilbury in Essex, UK, Mitsui said on July 7. The collaboration aims to contribute to the UK's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The first project involves a small-scale proof-of-concept demonstrator project to produce green hydrogen, which will be used to decarbonise port equipment by transitioning from fossil fuels to hydrogen. This project will serve as a demonstration of the viability and benefits of using hydrogen as an alternative fuel source.

The second project is an initial study for a 10 MW green hydrogen plant. The plant will be located on Port of Tilbury land that was previously occupied by a coal-fired power station. By repurposing this area for green hydrogen production, the project aims to transform a site historically associated with fossil fuel power generation into a hub for renewable hydrogen production.

The green hydrogen plant will explore options to scale up the development over a ten-year period, potentially reaching a capacity of over 100 MW, Mitsui & Co said. The hydrogen produced will be used for port infrastructure and operations, as well as supplying green hydrogen to the surrounding industries.
