Abu Dhabi's state energy company ADNOC has started the construction of the Middle East's first high-speed hydrogen refuelling station, it announced on July 18.

Located in Masdar City, the project will involve the creation of clean hydrogen from water through an electrolyzer powered by clean grid electricity. In collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation and Al-Futtaim Motors, ADNOC will conduct testing of the high-speed hydrogen refuelling station using a fleet of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

This partnership will enable ADNOC to gather valuable data on the performance of hydrogen transportation technology, further supporting the development of the UAE’s hydrogen infrastructure, the company said.

ADNOC said it is committed to sustainability and decarbonisation, investing in lower-carbon solutions and new energies to achieve a 25% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 and reach its Net Zero ambition by 2050.

Upon completion later this year, ADNOC Distribution will operate the high-speed hydrogen refuelling station in Masdar City, while a second station in Dubai Golf City will feature a conventional hydrogen fuelling system.
