Innova Hydrogen project will advance its methane pyrolysis technology to manufacture emissions-free hydrogen and graphite by-products.

By Dale Lunan

Alberta-based Innova Hydrogen said March 24 it had been awarded C$1.2mn (US$960mn) in funding for a joint research project with the University of Alberta studying hydrogen production using methane pyrolysis technology.

The funding, from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Alliance and Mitacs Accelerate Grants Program, will help Innova advance and optimise its low-cost thermal and catalytic methane pyrolysis technology that will produce clean hydrogen and decarbonise Canada’s energy sector as it works towards its net-zero goals.

The technology produces high-purity hydrogen gas and customisable, tailor-made graphite and graphene while generating no CO2 emissions.
