The government of Alberta said August 1 it would provide up to C$45mn (US$33.9mn) in a pair of funding competitions offering a total of C$50mn for the development of technologies across the hydrogen value chain.

One competition, led by Emissions Reductions Alberta (ERA), offers C$25mn to eligible projects in later stages of commercialisation with up to C$7mn to demonstrate innovative solutions and next generation technologies for the production, distribution and end use of clean hydrogen.

A parallel competition, led by Alberta Innovates, will offer C$20mn for early-stage innovations. This competition will be topped up by C$5mn in funding from Natural Resources Canada through its Energy Innovation Program.

“This targeted and coordinated effort between Emissions Reduction Alberta and Alberta Innovates with funding from the government of Alberta is required to ensure a healthy pipeline of hydrogen technologies across the value chain are supported,” ERA CEO Justin Riemer said.

Applications for both funding streams are now open, and will close on September 22 for the ERA competition and on September 26 for the Alberta Innovates competition. Successful applicants will be invited to submit full proposals.
