Archaea Energy, one of the largest renewable natural gas (RNG) producers in the US, said January 27 it had inked  a 20 year supply agreement with Canadian utility FortisBC.

It's the second long-term commercial agreement between Archaea and FortisBC, a leading energy solutions provider in BC serving approximately 1.2mn customers with natural gas, electricity, propane and renewable energy solutions.

FortisBC expects to purchase up to 7.6mn mnBtu/year of RNG generated by Archaea over 20 years, helping it achieve its goal of having 15% RNG content in its gas supply stream by 2030. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2022, pending regulatory approval from the British Columbia Utilities Commission.

“This landmark deal, which we believe is the largest RNG supply contract signed to date, is enabled by the breadth of our RNG project portfolio and highlights our ability to scale production with our partners’ growing demand for lower-carbon solutions,” said Brian McCarthy, Archaea’s CEO. “FortisBC is a pioneer in RNG usage and at the forefront of utility decarbonisation. Archaea is honoured to partner with FortisBC and support its ambitious goals for British Columbia.”

FortisBC’s RNG programme, which began in 2011, was the first in North America to offer RNG to customers.
