Houston-based renewable natural gas (RNG) developer Archaea Energy said August 15 it had entered into an expanded commercial partnership with Quebec utility Energir that will see it increase its RNG purchases from Archaea to about 2.04mn mnBtu.

The agreement, which remains subject to Quebec regulatory approval, would see purchases over a 20-year period begin in October 2023 and contribute to Energir’s goal of using RNG to provide 2% of its system supply by 2023 and 5% by 2025.

“If this agreement is approved by our regulatory authority, it will represent an important addition to our RNG supplies target,” said Renault-Francois Lortie, vice president, customers and gas supply at Energir. “It will inevitably strengthen the development of the RNG industry in Quebec, as it will allow a greater number of customers who are concerned about reducing their carbon footprint to benefit from renewable energy at a competitive cost.”
