BP managed to reduce the methane intensity of its upstream oil and gas operations to 0.07% last year from 0.12% in 2020, the company reported in its annual report on March 18.

This represents the most significant drop in recent years for the UK major. Its emissions fell in 2020 from 0.14% in 2019 and 0.16% in 2018. In absolute terms, upstream methane emissions fell to 43,000 metric tons in 2021 from 71,600 mt in the previous year.

BP plans to install methane measurement equipment at all its major oil and gas processing sites by 2023, publish the data, and push towards a 50% cut in its methane intensity.
