BP's Archaea Energy launches RNG plant in Kentucky

By Shardul SharmaBP-owned Archaea Energy has launched its renewable natural gas (RNG) plant in Jeffersonville, Kentucky, BP said on April 17. The plant is adjacent to the Montgomery County Landfill owned by Rumpke Waste and Recycling.
Landfill gas, a greenhouse gas emitted during the decomposition of waste in landfills, serves as the primary raw material for the RNG production at the Montgomery County plant. Utilising the Archaea Modular Design (AMD) process, the facility captures landfill gas from Rumpke's landfill and converts it into RNG.
"This opening marks a significant milestone for us in the Midwest," said Will Burton, executive vice president of Archaea Energy. "It's our second AMD project with Rumpke and shows our collective strength and ingenuity."
The Montgomery County Landfill has the capacity to process 3,200 ft3/minute of landfill gas into RNG. With the acquisition of Archaea, BP now stands as the largest RNG producer in the US, BP said. The acquisition was completed in January 2023. BP launched the first RNG plant post the Archaea acquisition in October last year.
Bioenergy stands as one of five strategic transition growth engines identified by BP, with plans to expand Archaea's production to approximately 50mn mmBtu/year by 2030.
