Bureau Veritas (BV) on February 27 announced the award of approval in principle (AiP) for an ammonia bunkering vessel designed by Japan's Sasaki Shipbuilding. The vessel design is based on a joint study of ammonia bunkering rules between Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and BV.

The vessel design, a 12,000 m3 NH3 bunkering vessel, is a product of a joint study initiated by MOL and BV to explore the possibilities and regulations surrounding ammonia bunkering. Sasaki Shipbuilding was subsequently engaged by MOL to bring this design to life, leveraging BV’s rules and expertise in the field.

In the evaluation process leading to the AiP, Bureau Veritas meticulously reviewed Sasaki’s design, taking into account the criteria outlined in the NR 620 rules for bunkering ships and NR 467 rules for the classification of steel ships.

The vessel is also eligible for BV’s Cleanship and Greenpassport additional class notations.
