Calgary-based Carbonova said February 21 it had received a C$2mn contribution from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) to advance its process for converting methane and CO2 into carbon nanofibers.

This funding represents an important level of support toward the next phase of Carbonova’s commercial development and will allow it to advance its technology and begin the design of its first commercial unit, it said.

“The funding from SDTC will materially contribute to the development and commercialisation of Carbonova’s technology,” Carbonova CEO Mina Zarabian said. “Advancement from the existing pilot scale to a small commercial unit is expected to significantly expand opportunities for applications of our technology globally.”

In March 2022, Carbonova received C$543,000 in funding from the government of Alberta to advance its technology, and in July 2022 it was added by Fluor to the Carbon to Value (C2V) initiative, which is targeting more robust commercialised carbon utilisation technologies.

SDTC, a federal Canadian agency, is the largest funder of sustainable small and medium-sized businesses in Canada.
