Chesapeake recertifies Marcellus production under EO, MiQ

By Dale LunanChesapeake Energy said July 17 it had recertified all of its Marcellus shale gas production – about 4.4bn ft3/day from 942 wells – under both the Equitable Origin and MiQ certified gas standards.
The company received a Grade A- under Equitable Origin’s EO100™ Standard for Responsible Energy Development and a Grade A under MiQ’s methane emissions standard.
“These achievements are a testament to our team and our commitment to deliver the affordable, reliable and lower carbon energy the world needs,” Chesapeake CEO Nick Dell’Osso said. “We take our role in responsible energy production very seriously and are extremely proud of the ability to minimise our environmental footprint across our operating areas and further reduce emissions.”
To achieve its A- grade from Equitable Origin, Chesapeake needed to score at least 95% in EO’s five core principles: corporate governance, transparency and ethics (96%); human rights, social impacts and community investment (100%); indigenous peoples’ rights; fair labor and working conditions (99%); and climate change, biodiversity and environmental impacts (96%).
Responsible Energy Solutions, which assessed Chesapeake’s performance, evaluated the indigenous peoples’ rights principle as not applicable for the Marcellus assessment.
“The high grade achieved in this assessment is reflective of a demonstrated commitment to transparency and continuous improvement,” Equitable Origin CEO Soledad Mills said. “This example of responsible energy leadership is an important step towards a better, more sustainable future.”
Chesapeake becomes the first producer to receive a letter grade under the EO 100™ standard and the first producer to receive certification under both the EO and MiQ standards across two major basins. Its Haynesville assets are expected to be recertified in December.
