California-based Clean Energy Fuels said April 23 it had launched its third farm-based renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility in the US Midwest this year, with a two-digester plant on a dairy farm in South Dakota now injecting RNG into the interstate natural gas transmission system.
The facility, at the Victory Farms Dairy operation in Revillo, South Dakota, can convert 120,000 gallons/day of manure from 6,000 jersey cows into 900,000 gallons/year of negative carbon-intensity RNG.
The $26mn project, developed in partnership with Dynamic Renewables and financed through one of Clean Energy’s production joint ventures, is the third this year, following on the heels of another South Dakota project and a facility in Iowa, both of which began injecting RNG into the interstate gas transmission system in February.
“We are committed to working with dairies to bring more RNG into the market,” said Clay Corbus, Clean Energy’s senior vice president of renewables. “Projects like Victory Farms will provide us the fuel to help decarbonise heavy-duty transportation while simultaneously providing an additional revenue stream for dairy owners and helping with their waste management.”
