State-owned CNOOC has completed China's first offshore carbon capture and storage project, designed to permanently bury CO2 under the seabed, China Daily reported on June 16.

The project will serve the Enping 15-1 oilfield located at the mouth of the Pearl River, about 200 km south of Shenzhen, Guangdong province. The project will store CO2 emitted during the oil extraction process, and is capable of storing more than 300,000 metric tons/year of the greenhouse gas, China Daily reported.

The project will further facilitate the country's ambition to achieve a carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060, Liu Huaxiang, general manager of the deepwater engineering construction department under CNOOC's Shenzhen branch, said.
