Classification society DNV has presented Korea's Hanwha Ocean with an approval in principle (AiP) for a new 345 m 270,000 m³ LNG carrier, the company said on October 6.

The LNG carrier is designed with a breadth of 55 m and five cargo tanks to minimise sloshing pressure. It will be equipped with an X-DF engine and re-liquefaction system.

Under its class guidelines, DNV conducted a structural verification and feasibility study. Critical structural details were validated throughout the advanced analysis, and the sloshing calculation for cargo tanks was also reviewed.

"We believe this AiP marks the dawn of a new era in 270K LNG carrier designs and significantly enhances the competitiveness of ships built by Hanwha Ocean," said Jong Seo Kim, COO of Hanwha Ocean. "Through our collaboration with DNV, we are proudly pioneering cutting-edge technologies within the Korean shipbuilding industry."
