Norwegian shipping certifier DNV has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) on researching ways to decarbonise and digitalise Singapore's maritime sector, the two parties said on September 23.

Under the three-year partnership, DNV will lead research and development and educational initiatives with SIT, cooperating on developing ship and system designs using simulation-based approaches, joint industry applied research projects with entities in Singapore's maritime sector, and sharing knowledge.

“This MoU represents a new level of collaboration with SIT, and the beginning of a partnership focused on innovation, education and cooperation that will help accelerate the maritime industry’s sustainable transition goals,” Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, regional manager for southeast Asia, Pacific and India, for Maritime at DNV, said in a statement.

LNG as a maritime fuel has been growing in popularity as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. Other fuel solutions include marine batteries, hydrogen and ammonia.
