Italy's Eni and KazMunayGas (KMG), the national oil and gas company of Kazakhstan, will develop a 250 MW hybrid renewables-gas power plant in Zhanaozen, Mangystau Region, Eni announced on June 8. This project, undertaken as per an agreement signed between the two parties, is the first of its kind in Kazakhstan and aims to produce and supply low-carbon and stable electricity to KMG subsidiaries in the area.

The project will consist of a solar power plant, a wind power plant, and a gas power plant. The inclusion of gas power plants will help balance the power generation capacity, Eni said, adding that the project is designed to address the need for diversification and decarbonisation of energy supply for the oil and gas assets in the Mangystau Region.

“Eni is strongly committed to strengthen its leadership in Kazakhstan energy transition, accelerating the evolution of its business model. The project we announced today marks a further step towards growing Eni’s renewable generation capacity, while supporting Kazakhstan's decarbonization path”, said Eni’s CEO Claudio Descalzi.

Eni has been operating in Kazakhstan since 1992 and has significant involvement in the country's energy sector. It is a joint operator of the Karachaganak field and has equity partnerships in various projects in the Northern Caspian Sea, including the Kashagan field. Eni and KMG are joint operators in the exploration block Abay. In the renewable energy sector, Eni operates through Arm Wind with an installed or under-construction capacity of 150 MW.
