Green hydrogen could be used to decarbonise the BRN gas plant, Eni said.

By Joseph Murphy

Italy's Eni plans to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of a green hydrogen pilot project in Bir Rebaa North in the Algerian desert, under a memorandum signed with the north African country's state gas company Sonatrach.

Green hydrogen production could be used to decarbonise the BRN gas plant, Eni said on May 26. The company did not divulge any further details of the project.

Eni is the largest foreign investor in Algeria's oil and gas industry. Under the latest memorandum, it will also consider developing existing gas discoveries in the country with Sonatrach that could yield up to 3bn m3/year of extra gas supply, for export to Italy via the Transmed pipeline.
