Indian state-owned Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) has officially inaugurated its compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Budaun, located in the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), it announced on January 28 via the X platform (formerly known as Twitter).

The ceremonial opening was led by Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of UP, with the presence of Hardeep Puri, the Indian minister of petroleum and natural gas. Adityanath also marked the occasion by laying the foundation stone for eight additional CBG plants in the state.

The Budaun plant, equipped with a processing capacity of 100 tonnes/day of lignocellulosic biomass, can produce 14 tonnes/day of CBG.

India last year announced a phased mandatory blending of CBG in CNG and domestic piped natural gas (PNG) segments starting the fiscal year 2025-26. This move is aimed at reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels, promoting sustainable energy sources, and achieving net zero emission goals.
