Japanese energy company Inpex Corporation has invested in Tsubame BHB Co., a Tokyo-based startup that develops new ammonia synthesis technology, it said on July 25.

“This new ammonia synthesis technology is expected to reduce power consumption and improve safety by enabling ammonia synthesis at lower temperatures and lower pressures compared to conventional technologies, and contribute to decarbonisation through clean ammonia production,” Inpex said.

Inpex will assist Tsubame BHB in commercialising its small-scale, on-site ammonia production with a view to realise large-scale, low-cost operations in the future and provide a stable supply of clean energy.

In February this year, Inpex said it will develop a hydrogen business, which is one of its five net zero businesses, and plans to commercialise three or more projects by around 2030 while aiming to produce and supply 100,000 tons/year of hydrogen/ammonia.
