Japanese trio, ADNOC to study GHG emissions at UAE plant

By Shardul SharmaMitsui & Co., Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), Inpex Corp. and ADNOC have signed an agreement to conduct a joint study to verify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a clean ammonia project in the UAE, the three Japanese companies announced on April 18.
The agreement was signed at a bilateral meeting held at the 2023 G7 Ministers' Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment on April 16 in Japan.
The study will examine calculation and measurement methods of GHG emissions and carbon intensity (CI) for the capture and storage of CO2 emitted from the project's production processes in the UAE.
Mitsui agreed to participate in the ADNOC-led project last year, with the aim of contributing to future exports of clean ammonia to Japan and the decarbonisation of the country's electric power, by verifying CO2 reduction methods and reduction volumes.
In addition, JOGMEC's technical support during the study is to be implemented as part of its financial assistance programme for hydrogen including ammonia. Mitsui will consider using JOGMEC's financial assistance programme for clean ammonia production projects in the UAE in the future.
JOGMEC published the GHG and CI guidelines (1st edition) and CCS guidelines (1st edition) in May last year, and the newly developed CI guidelines (2nd edition) and CO2-EOR guidelines (1st edition) are currently undergoing public comments.
Inpex will contribute to the project by verifying the requirements and storage volume to conduct the safe and long-term storage of CO2 as CO2EOR at Abu Dhabi onshore oil fields in which it has a participating interest.
