Japan's MOL joins initiative to slash maritime methane emissions

By Shardul SharmaJapanese shipping firm Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has joined the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII) as a main partner, it said on April 13.
MAMII was set up in September last year to identify, accelerate and advocate technology solutions that can support the maritime industry in measuring and managing methane emissions. Its aim is to minimise the environmental impact of LNG in shipping and aid the transition to future fuels. Fourteen companies have joined MAMII.
By joining MAMII, MOL aims to minimise the environmental impact of methane slip in shipping whilst aiding the transition to further low and decarbonisation of LNG-fuelled vessels, the company said.
In addition to participating in MAMII, MOL is working with other partners on a technology development project to significantly reduce methane slip on LNG-fuelled vessels by utilising catalysts and improving the engine's combustion process, it said.
MOL said it is also taking initiatives aimed at the early introduction of bio-methane and synthetic methane for the further low and decarbonisation of LNG-fuelled vessels.
