Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. (Japex) and Nippon Gas Line (NGL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to conduct a joint study aiming at the future implementation of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) and carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) through domestic marine transportation of liquefied CO2 and port developments, Japex said on November 30.

The goal of the study is to assess the feasibility and efficiency of transporting liquefied CO2 by domestic marine transportation connecting major ports throughout Japan. Additionally, the study will identify any potential challenges or obstacles that may need to be addressed to successfully implement CCS/CCUS projects on a large scale.

The transportation of liquefied CO2 is a critical component of CCS/CCUS projects, as it allows for the safe and efficient capture and storage of CO2 emissions from various sources. By collaborating on this study, Japex and NGL aim to contribute to the development of a robust and scalable CCS/CCUS value chain in Japan, the company said.
