Jera eyes ammonia purchase deal

Japanese power producer Jera will conduct an international competitive bid to procure ammonia, it said on February 18. The company has sent a request for proposals outlining bidding conditions to more than 30 companies.
The company plans to sign a long-term contract to purchase about 500,000 metric tons/year of ammonia starting from 2027. Jera said it would evaluate the proposals received and, after selecting multiple companies by around May of this year, move forward in discussing specifics with them.
Jera is working on a project to demonstrate the use of ammonia at the Hekinan thermal power station, aiming to switch 20% of the fuel at its fourth unit to ammonia by the late 2020s.
Under its Jera Zero CO2 Emissions 2050 objective, the company has been working to reduce emissions from its domestic and overseas businesses to zero by 2050, to promote the adoption of greener fuels, and to pursue thermal power that does not emit CO2 during power generation.
