Japan’s Jera has entered into an agreement to purchase ammonia from compatriot Mitsui & Co., the company announced on June 16. The ammonia will be used in a demonstration project conducted at the Hekinan thermal power station in Hekinan, Aichi prefecture, Japan.

Jera, in collaboration with IHI Corporation, has been working on a demonstration project to establish technology for large-scale co-firing of fuel ammonia (which accounts for 20% of the heating value) at the Hekinan thermal power station.

The project is being carried out under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO) grant programme since the fiscal year 2021. This initiative is significant as it represents a crucial step towards achieving rapid and cost-effective decarbonisation of thermal power generation, Jera said.

The ammonia purchased from Mitsui under the agreement will be used in the project starting from the fiscal year 2023.

Jera said it is actively working to eliminate CO2 emissions from its domestic and international operations by 2050. The company is promoting the adoption of cleaner fuels and pursuing thermal power generation that is carbon-neutral.
