Japan's Jera, one of the world's largest power producers, and Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the country's largest power utility, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a decarbonisation roadmap for EVN, the Japanese company said on October 6.

The MoU outlines a number of areas of collaboration, including developing a roadmap for the decarbonization of EVN's entire business, including the thermal power sector and exploring the introduction of ammonia and hydrogen to EVN's thermal power plants

Ammonia and hydrogen are both low-carbon fuels that can be used to generate electricity. Their introduction to Vietnam's thermal power sector would help to reduce the country's reliance on fossil fuels and its carbon emissions.

The Vietnamese government has announced a policy to promote the conversion to ammonia and hydrogen in thermal power generation. The MoU between Jera and EVN will support the implementation of this policy and help Vietnam to achieve its decarbonisation goals.
