JGC bags contract for hydrogen project in Japan

JGC has been awarded a contract for the construction of ground facilities in Inpex Corporation's clean hydrogen and ammonia project in Japan's Niigata prefecture, the company said on January 10.
The project calls for the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of a natural gas pretreatment facility, hydrogen production facilities, carbon capture and injection facilities, ammonia storage and offloading facilities, power generation facilities, utility facilities, and facilities connected to the wells in Inpex-owned Higashi-Kashiwazaki gas field in Kashiwazaki city.
Inpex expects an annual hydrogen production volume of 700 metric tons, synthesised from natural gas. Some of the hydrogen produced will be used as feedstock for ammonia production, with the rest used in power generation. CO2 generated during hydrogen and ammonia production will be injected into a depleted reservoir nearby.
The lump-sum contract is for an undisclosed amount, with completion of construction scheduled for August 2025, JGC said. The carbon capture facility will apply high-pressure regenerative CO2 capture technology developed by JGC and BASF, while the hydrogen production facility will apply Air Liquide hydrogen production technology.
Inpex’s Kashiwazaki clean hydrogen and ammonia project will be conducted under a subsidised business adopted by the government's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation.
