Japan’s Kansai Electric Power and Medco Power Indonesia have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop decarbonisation technology for use in Indonesian thermal power plants, Kansai said on September 27.

The parties will examine the applicability of biomass co-firing/single-firing and CCS technology to existing thermal power plants, which account for 80% of the country's power generation.

Indonesia has set a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 and is accelerating decarbonisation of its power sector.

In 2020, Kansai and Medco agreed to build and operate gas-fired power plants in a joint venture in the southeast Asian nation.
