Attempts to limit gas development in Mozambique are "not sensible," the IMF's representative in the country, Alexis Meyer-Cirkel, commented in a briefing on November 23.

"Mozambique is a country that emits very little carbon in proportion to its population and in comparison to other countries in the world," Meyer-Cirkel said.

There are several large-scale LNG project underway in Mozambique's gas-rich north that will also supply some gas to the domestic market, supporting a growth in gas-fired power generation.

Mozambique relies heavily on hydropower dams for its electricity needs, which can create problems during periods of drought. The government also wants to use the country's gas resources to expand electricity access. Currently only 29.6% of the population have this access.
