Mitsubishi Shipbuilding advances ammonia handling system

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has begun demonstration testing of the ammonia gas abatement system (AGAS), a subsystem of MAmmoSS to safely treat surplus ammonia, MHI said on August 21. Mitsubishi Ammonia Supply and Safety System (MAmmoSS) facilitates the use of ammonia as marine fuel.
The AGAS demonstration is taking place at the Nagasaki District MHI Research & Innovation Center. Through these tests, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding aims to evaluate the system's processing capabilities across various scenarios that simulate ammonia operations onboard ships.
Moreover, the company is collaborating with related equipment manufacturers to potentially broaden the application of developed ammonia-related technology across multiple industries, thus enhancing safe ammonia handling, MHI said.
MAmmoSS is a comprehensive system encompassing multiple subsystems, including AGAS, a high-pressure/low-pressure ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS), and an ammonia fuel tank system. An innovative aspect of MAmmoSS lies in its modularity, allowing the creation of optimal modular configurations for onboard plants with multiple engines and boilers, MHI stated.
