Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and Nihon Shipyard have begun a joint study for the development of an ocean-going liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carrier, MHI announced on May 22.

The project aims to construct the vessel starting in 2027 to meet the increasing demand for transportation of CO2 for carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, the company said.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will leverage its expertise in designing and constructing LNG and LPG carriers. Nihon Shipyard is working toward the commercialisation of LNG and ammonia-fueled ships. The company sees the potential for LCO2 carriers as its next initiative to solidify its leading position in the industry, MHI said
