MSC Cruises to power new ship with bio-LNG

By Shardul SharmaSwitzerland-based MSC Cruises has procured 400 metric tons of bio-LNG to power its new flagship, MSC Euribia, the company said on May 25.
The aim is to demonstrate net zero greenhouse gas emissions during the ship's voyage from Saint-Nazaire, France, to Copenhagen, Denmark. The use of bio-LNG will adhere to the mass-balance system, ensuring compliance with the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). Each batch of bio-LNG utilised has obtained certification from the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification.
To optimize energy efficiency, MSC Euribia will be monitored and optimised by specialists from MSC Cruises, Chantiers de L'Atlantique (the ship's constructor), and Gasum, a Finnish energy company.
MSC Cruises said the fuel flexibility of its newbuilds will enable the accommodation of various renewable fuels available presently and in the future.
