Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) on February 22 announced plans to produce biogas for generating electricity to illuminate the LT market at Grant Road in south Mumbai.

The corporation has awarded a contract for the establishment of a 1.5 tonnes/day bio-methanation plant. This facility aims to generate electricity by utilising municipal organic wet waste. The initiative comes as part of MMRC's commitment to environmental compliance, in collaboration with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The project aligns with the environmental clearance granted for the redevelopment project of the building at Kalbadevi-Girgaon.

“This project will facilitate production of clean energy and provide for environmentally sound management of municipal organic wet waste. It will also help to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions apart from reducing cost of transporting the waste,” said R. Ramana, director (planning and real-estate/NFBR), MMRC.

The responsibility for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the bio-methanation plant has been entrusted to Aerocare Aviation Services.
