NGIF Accelerator and its Industry Grants programme said November 15 it had made a C$365,900 grant to Vancouver-based Hydron Energy for its waste-to-fuel upgrading system.

Hydron’s Intensified Regenerative Upgrading Platform Technology system, or INTRUPTor™, upgrades raw biogas derived from organic waste treatment to renewable natural gas (RNG). This system provides for “significant” capital and operating cost savings over conventional biogas upgrading technologies, many of which are derived from conventional oil refining solutions.

“The high cost of biogas upgrading is an obstacle to accelerating renewable natural gas production from biogas,” Hydron Energy CEO Soheil Khiavi said. “Hydron recognised the lack of original solutions for biofuel upgrading and took the initiative to develop an original, low-cost, and mobile solution for renewable natural gas production.”

Hydron Energy will test its first generation INTRUPTor™ later this year and early next year in Alberta and Ontario.

Once the system is commercialised, Hydron will conduct additional research and development to use the solution in other markets, including clean hydrogen production, direct air carbon capture and rare gas production.
