State-owned oil and gas producer Oil India has commissioned India’s first green hydrogen pilot plant in the eastern state of Assam, the Indian government said on April 20. The plant has a production capacity of 10 kg/day.

The plant produces green hydrogen from the electricity generated by the existing 500-kW solar plant using a 100-kW Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolyser array. The use of AEM technology is being used for the first time in India, the government said.

This plant is expected to triple its production to 30 kg/day in future. Oil India has initiated a detailed study in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati on blending of green hydrogen with natural gas and its effect on the existing infrastructure of the company, the government said.
