Japanese gas retailer Osaka Gas and refiner Eneos have initiated a joint study to explore the feasibility of large-scale production of e-methane in Japan using green hydrogen, the companies announced on August 29.

In this study, green hydrogen produced outside Japan will be converted into methylcyclohexane, a medium for storing and transporting hydrogen. The goal is to establish manufacturing facilities capable of producing approximately 60mn m3 of e-methane annually.

The companies said that the conversion of hydrogen into e-methane holds significant potential for expanding hydrogen usage and promoting a hydrogen-based society. E-methane also supports the decarbonisation of city gas infrastructure, utilising existing facilities and equipment with minimal alterations, they said.

The companies did not disclose how much they would have to invest in the project if it advances to the final stage.
