Sinopec, Shell, Baosteel, and BASF have signed an agreement to develop a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in east China, Sinopec said on August 1.

During the joint research period, the four parties will collectively assess the feasibility of constructing an open-access CCS cluster project in the eastern region of China, considering technical, commercial, and policy aspects.

Eastern China is one of the most developed areas in China, contributing over 20% of the country's GDP, and it also has relatively high carbon dioxide emissions. The implementation of this joint project aims to provide flexible and effective CO2 emission reduction solutions for industrial enterprises along the Yangtze River in the east China region, Sinopec said.

The four parties had signed a memorandum of cooperation on the project during the 2022 China International Import Expo in November.
