Calgary-based Qube Technologies has secured its second approval from the Alberta energy regulator for an alternative fugitive emissions monitoring programme, the company said on September 29.

This programme will involve using continuous monitoring to conduct methane leak detection and repair (LDAR), Qube said, noting it was the only technology provider in North America to receive regulatory approval for this type of monitoring.

Qube provides oil and gas operators with fixed sensors that can continuously monitor for leaks at facilities. The data obtained from these sensors is then analysed using artificial intelligence to work out where leaks are, their type and their significance. This helps operators address them.

Qube is working with Ember Resources and Highwood Emissions to demonstrate the benefits of its continuous monitoring solution.

“This programme has been designed to achieve superior greenhouse gas reductions when compared to traditional LDAR programmes while providing Ember with significant cost savings,” Qube CEO Alex MacGregor commented. “Data is critical for managing emissions reductions and we feel that our technology provides a robust solution for operators to effectively reduce their emissions and minimise environmental impact.”
