RenEco, in collaboration with Dutch Nordsol, has set up the UK's inaugural bio-LNG production facility in Rushden, Nordsol announced on September 20. The plant is expected to commence production in the first quarter of 2024 and is anticipated to yield 3.4 kilotons of bio-LNG annually, which will fuel over 8mn miles (13mn km) of fossil-free road transport for heavy-duty trucks.

Bio-LNG is a renewable fuel produced from organic waste through anaerobic digestion. It is a clean and sustainable alternative to diesel and can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector.

Nordsol believes that bio-LNG is positioned to play a pivotal role in the sustainable transformation of long-haul road and maritime transport. Leon van Bossum, CEO of Nordsol, said, "Bio-LNG is the best solution for decarbonising the hard-to-abate long-haul transport sector today. With this inaugural production plant in the UK, we demonstrate that onsite biogas liquefaction to bio-LNG is not only sustainable but also affordable and scalable."

William Wykes, director of RenEco, said, "After extensive market research investigating how to decarbonize both our own HGV fleet and our retail customers' fleets, Nordsol was chosen as a long-term partner to provide their liquefaction technology."

Nordsol said that the Rushden facility is the inaugural step in a broader strategy to establish multiple bio-LNG plants across the UK.
