Saipem and Stockholm Exergi have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on a carbon capture project in Stockholm, Sweden, Saipem said on July 26.
The project aims to install a CO2 capture plant at Stockholm Exergi's existing bio-cogeneration plant, with Saipem handling the engineering, procurement, and construction activities for the carbon capture unit, CO2 storage, and ship loading systems for CO2 transportation.
Once completed, the plant will have the capacity to capture 800,000 tonnes/year of biogenic carbon dioxide from the Vartaverket power plant, which is biomass-fuelled. This will result in "negative emissions," meaning it will effectively remove CO2 from the atmosphere, Saipem said.
The project has received financial support from the European Innovation Fund. The successful implementation of the project will lead to the issuance of carbon removal certificates, which can then be traded on the market.
