SK E&S, a South Korean energy and chemical company, and Honeywell UOP, a US-based company, have signed a joint development agreement to build a carbon capture demonstration plant in a natural gas power plant, the Korean company announced on September 26.

The two companies plan to initiate basic design for the plant and discuss ways to commercialise the jointly developed carbon capture technology. SK E&S will provide one of its power plant sites for the demonstration project and perform various licensing and EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) tasks. Honeywell UOP will provide its advanced solvent carbon capture (ASCC) technology.

Honeywell UOP's ASCC technology is capable of capturing more than 95% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) in exhaust gases emitted after burning fossil fuels. SK E&S said it is pursuing low-carbon LNG production using Korea's first CCS (carbon capture and storage) technology through the development of the Barossa gas field in Australia. The company plans to continue carbon reduction efforts in the power generation sector based on its partnership with Honeywell UOP.

Last year, Australian energy company Santos, SK E&S, Korean CCUS Association (K-CCUS), Australia’s CO2CRC and Korea Trade Insurance Corporation agreed to jointly develop CCS projects in Australia and the region, including Bayu-Undan in Timor Leste. Santos and SK E&S are partners in Barossa gas project and Darwin LNG.
