Korea Register (KR), K Shipbuilding, Sunbo Industries, and Dongsung Finetec have signed an agreement to develop a 12,000 m3 LNG-powered liquefied CO2 carrier, KR announced on September 7. The agreement was signed at Gastech 2023, which is being held in Singapore.

The agreement comes as the demand for LCO2 carriers is expected to increase due to the global focus on decarbonisation. LCO2 carriers are used to transport captured carbon dioxide by sea.

Under the agreement, K Shipbuilding will design the LCO2 carrier, Sunbo Industries will develop the cargo handling and fuel supply systems, and Dongsung Finetec will develop the LCO2 cargo and LNG fuel tank.

KR will verify the safety and suitability of the ship in accordance with classification rules and international agreements and ultimately grant approval for concept certification.
