Deal is the second for German utility in North American certified gas space.

Southwestern Energy (SWN), one of the largest dual-basin natural gas producers in the US, said June 14 it had reached a multi-year agreement to supply German utility Uniper’s North American subsidiary with responsibly sourced gas (RSG) from its Appalachia and Haynesville Basin assets.

SWN will supply Uniper with RSG for its US midstream gas portfolio that includes distribution to downstream customers and to US liquefaction facilities exporting LNG to global markets.

The agreement represents the first RSG transaction for Uniper in the US and its second in North America, on the heels of a December 2021 agreement with Canadian certified gas producer Vermilion Energy.

Southwestern certified its Appalachia gas with Project Canary in 2021 and expanded the certification programme when it acquired Haynesville assets late last year.

“We believe natural gas is foundational to a low-carbon future, and that US natural gas in particular plays a vital role in supporting global energy supply and security,” Southwestern CEO Bill Way said. “This agreement further demonstrates SWN’s differentiated position to reliably deliver responsibly sourced gas both here at home and abroad.”

SWN is also deploying continuous emissions monitors at all of its pad locations to further improve and validate its emissions performance.
