Project will ensure permanent sequestration of stored carbon.

US infrastructure company Tallgrass Energy said February 9 it had entered into an agreement with Project Canary to develop a programme that will monitor and verify CO2 sequestration volumes at its Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub project.

“Precise measurement and validation of sequestered volumes is a critical component of a successful, commercial-scale CO2 sequestration hub,” Tallgrass segment president Kyle Quackenbush said. “Project Canary and its team of climate scientists and engineers provide critical expertise in this project’s development, which will help advance broadly shared decarbonisation and clean energy goals.”

Normally associated with natural gas certification efforts, Project Canary will deploy the same Canary X continuous emissions monitoring units it uses in natural gas applications. It will also conduct additional periodic reservoir analysis to ensure the stored CO2 volumes remain in place.

“The Tallgrass team demonstrates what the net-zero measurement economy demands – bold action to verify that every molecule of CO2 put underground stays underground,” Project Canary CEO Chris Romer said. “Advancing assessment across the entire energy value chain – from upstream production to midstream transportation and ultimately sequestration – has the potential to revolutionise decarbonisation efforts and accelerate progress toward net-zero.”
