France's TotalEnergies announced on March 6 it was acquiring Poland's main biogas producer Polska Grupa Biogazowa (PGB), along with a 200-MW pipeline of planned solar projects.

PGB mainly generates heat and power from biogas that is sourced from organic waste. It owns and operates 17 producing facilities and another under construction. They have a combined power generation capacity of 166 GWh/year. It has a further 23 projects planned.

Through the acquisition, TotalEneries will raise its biogas production capacity to 1.1 TWh while giving it a prominent position in the Polish biogas market  – Europe's fourth-largest. The French company aims to boost its biogas capacity to at least 10 TWh annually by 2030.

TotalEnergies is also making its first foray into the Polish solar market through the purchase of six solar projects under development. The first of the solar farms, situated in north and west Poland, are due online by 2025.

“These agreements illustrate TotalEnergies' commitment to developing its renewable activities in Poland, and in Europe as a whole, to support the European Green Deal,” Stephane Michel, TotalEnergies' president for gas, renewables and power, said in a statement.

He added that TotalEnergies hoped to also develop offshore wind capacity in Poland.
