Three Japanese companies, Eneos Corp., JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Corp. and Electric Power Development Co. (J-Power), will establish a joint venture to accelerate preparations for the commercialisation of domestic carbon capture and storage (CCS), they said on January 26.

The three companies are jointly working on a feasibility study for large-scale CCS in Japan to reduce CO₂ emissions. The joint venture, called West Japan Carbon Dioxide Storage Survey Co., will be established in February this year.

West Japan Carbon Dioxide Storage Survey Co. plans to select sites for CO₂ storage in western Japan where the sources of Eneos and J-Power emissions are located. It aims to start CO₂ injection in 2030.
