By Shardul SharmaFinnish technology company Wartsila on November 2 announced the delivery of a biogas liquefaction plant to Denmark's GronGas. The plant is located in Hjorring, Denmark and has an annual production capacity of more than 6,200 tonnes of bioLNG.
The Hjorring contract was awarded to Wartsila in 2022, and the official start-up of the plant took place in June this year. The facility is one of two biogas plants owned and operated by GronGas in Denmark. The other plant, located in Vra, also features a Wartsila biogas upgrading solution.
The plant transforms manure-based biogas into bioLNG, which is a renewable fuel that can be used to replace fossil fuels in heavy vehicles, power generation, and industrial processes.
The plant is equipped with Wartsila's Puregas CA biogas upgrading and polishing unit, VAC solution, and liquefaction unit based on mixed refrigerant technology. It also has a 250 m3 bioLNG storage tank and a bioLNG export station to tank-trucks.
The plant is expected to generate annual CO2 savings of approximately 41,000 tonnes, Wartsila said.
