Westport Fuel Systems, a player in alternative fuel systems space, has been awarded a contract by an undisclosed global heavy truck manufacturer, it said on December 19. The contract entails adapting Westport's LNG HPDI fuel system to comply with the Euro 7 emissions requirements for heavy-duty vehicle applications. The development programme, estimated at $33mn, will be entirely funded by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

Work on the programme has already been initiated, and Westport anticipates the launch of the new LNG and liquefied biomethane-fueled product within the next few years. The HPDI fuel system is designed to meet Euro 7 standards, introducing improvements such as enhanced fuel pressure control for increased efficiency, support for higher pressure fuel supply systems to optimise engine performance, improved reliability and durability, and the incorporation of on-board fuel consumption monitoring (OBFCM).

The development programme reinforces Westport's ongoing collaboration with the OEM to create low-carbon solutions for heavy-duty trucking. Leveraging the success of Westport's existing HPDI LNG truck application, which has been commercially available and in operation on roads for several years, the new program aligns with the objectives of Euro 7 standards.

Euro 7 standards aim to mitigate air pollution from road transport by reducing emissions limits for new motor vehicles sold in the European Union. The focus is on pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter. While the final agreement on the new regulation is pending, the European Commission's proposal is to implement these updated standards for heavy-duty vehicles from mid-2027.
