Adani Total Gas starts its first biogas plant in India

By Shardul SharmaAdani TotalEnergies Biomass (ATBL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mumbai-listed city gas company Adani Total Gas (ATGL), has initiated operations at phase one of its Barsana biogas plant situated in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India.
The Barsana project is structured in three phases, ultimately reaching an aggregate capacity of 600 tonnes/day of feedstock. At full commissioning, it is expected to produce over 42 tonnes/day of compressed biogas (CBG) and 217 tonnes/day of organic fertiliser.
ATGL highlights that upon completion of phase three, the Barsana plant will be India's largest agricultural waste-based bio-CNG facility. The total investment for all three phases of the Barsana project is anticipated to surpass 2bn rupees ($24mn).
India last year announced a phased mandatory blending of CBG in CNG and domestic piped natural gas (PNG) segments starting the fiscal year 2025-26. This move is aimed at reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels, promoting sustainable energy sources, and achieving net zero emission goals.
