CO2 will be used to produce e-methanol fuel for shipping industry.

Ontario renewable natural gas (RNG) developer Anaergia said August 17 it had entered into an agreement with renewables developer European Energy A/S to supply up to 60,000 metric tons/year of liquefied biogenic CO2 over a 10-year period.

Anaergia will provide the liquefied CO2 from anaerobic digesters that will operate at its plant now under construction near Tonder, Denmark.

European Energy will use the biogenic CO2 to produce green e-methanol, which it will supply to AP Moller-Maersk for use as a fuel in the first container ship Moller-Maersk is having built to operate on e-methanol.

“The benefit for us is the ability to sell the biogenic CO2 from our plants that is produced when we convert organic materials to methane and CO2,” Anaergia CEO Andrew Benedek said. “By selling this CO2 instead of returning it to the atmosphere, our plants contribute to de-carbonising hard-to-abate sectors, such as shipping, while becoming more profitable, as we turn this waste gas from our plants into a useful fuel.”
