The biomethane came from a landfill waste site.

Biomethane, derived from a landfill waste site, has entered the Portuguese natural gas grid for the first time, the government reported on July 19.

Portugal's minister of environment and climate action, Duarte Cordeiro, was on site to witness the biomethane get injected into the system in Mirandela, in the Braganca district. The project, led by companies Residuos do Nordeste and Dourogas group, will provide 80 domestic customers and a number of local companies with energy supply.

"It is very important that it happened here because it is a sign that we have throughout the country an enormous capacity for innovation and regional cooperation that allowed an extraordinary moment like this to happen in this region," the minister said.
